After an exhausting and stressful work week, I could not wait to escape into the wonderful world of all things food at the Food Blog South conference. In its second year, Food Blog South is held in Birmingham, AL and is now the second largest food blogging conference in the country. While I don’t have any other food blogging conferences to compare it to, I can see why it drew in an exponentially larger crowd for its second year.
Food trends, photography and food styling, blog design, recipe development and much more were covered by the most knowledgeable, seasoned people. I took notes like a mad man hoping to suck up all the information I was given over the course of the day. During the food photography & styling session, we had the opportunity to get hands-on and take photos while Jennifer Davick & Marian Cooper Cairns guided us. What do you think of my practice shots??
And then there’s the best part of the conference–the food! Pastries from Edgar’s Bakery & Cafe with FinerGrind coffee kicked off the day, followed by the best catered lunch I have ever had thanks to Shindigs Catering. I followed up my lunch with ice cream from one of the conference sponsors, High Road Craft Ice Cream & Sorbet. You can find this gold at Whole Foods stores, but good luck choosing just one flavor to try.
After the conference, we gathered downtown at Good People Brewing Company for a beer & cheese pairing event (this is why it’s fun to hang with the foodie crowd!). I’m no connoisseur of beer or cheese, so I was grateful to have directions on the perfect pairings to try. My favorite combination for the evening was the Kentucky Rose cheese from Kenny’s Farmhouse Cheese (Austin, KY) with the Coffee Oatmeal Stout.
