Add this protein and fiber-rich Blueberry Cottage Cheese Parfait to your morning routine for a healthier start to the day!
Happy New Year, Nutrition Adventurers! How is 2017 treating you so far? It’s been a busy start to the new year over here and I’m excited that my first blog post for the year is centered around my favorite meal of the day….breakfast!
If you’ve been reading this blog for awhile or if you personally know me, then you’re already aware how adamant I am about starting the day with a good breakfast. My passion for breakfast runs deep. My family and I actually were actually discussing this very topic while I was home for the holidays. If I cross paths with a non-breakfast eater, I’ll do my best to convince them that breakfast is not a meal to be skipped.
Why? So many reasons but let me narrow it down to three:
- Better ability to focus at work or school –> after fasting for 6+ hours while sleeping, our bodies and brains are in need of glucose upon wakening for basic functioning, like learning and retaining information, and visual and spacial understanding.
- Breakfast is important for weight loss/weight maintenance –> several research studies support this claim & participants in the National Weight Control Registry who have maintained a 30 lb. weight loss for a year or longer report eating breakfast daily.
- Eating breakfast daily may lead to other healthier lifestyle choices –> a study of 4,200 adults found that consistent breakfast eaters are more likely to exercise regularly.
Today I have a simple recipe made with Post® Shredded Wheat (+ a coupon!) that is perfect for busy mornings when you’re rushing out the door. Watch just how easy it is to assemble this parfait for breakfast on-the-go!
Post® Shredded Wheat is high in fiber, which will help keep you feeling full until lunch rolls around. A one cup serving of Post® Shredded Wheat provides 24% of the daily value of dietary fiber, 6 grams of protein, and only has 170 calories.
Post® Shredded Wheat is the perfect addition to breakfast parfaits because it provides a nice crunch in between the layers of cottage cheese or yogurt, and fruit. Plus, we all can benefit from more fiber in our diets as most Americans are not meeting the recommendations for daily fiber intake—25 grams for women and 38 grams for men.
For a healthier morning routine, be sure to include a balanced breakfast like this Blueberry Cottage Cheese Parfait made with Post® Shredded Wheat. Don’t forget to grab a coupon for Post cereals so you can make it at home!
