In the spring and summer months, smoothies are my go-to afternoon snack of choice. Smoothies are an easy way to get in several fruit and vegetable servings, and they can provide protein, healthy fats, and fiber. This Chocolate Strawberry Power Smoothie uses canned chickpeas for a protein and fiber boost. I had some leftover chickpeas from a salad I had made for lunch, so I figured why not throw them into the smoothie! That’s one of the other reasons I enjoy making smoothies at home–they’re a great way to use up ingredients you already have on hand.

This Chocolate Strawberry Power Smoothie is creamy, lightly sweetened, and makes for a satisfying breakfast or snack!

Nutrition Benefits of Strawberries

Strawberries are a versatile fruit that taste great, whether they’re fresh, frozen, or freeze-dried and offer several nutrition benefits. Research has shown that eating one serving of strawberries (8 strawberries = 1 serving) may be beneficial for heart health, diabetes, and may reduce the risk of certain cancers. Strawberries are also an excellent source of vitamin C–super important for immune health!

Using Chickpeas in Smoothies

While adding chickpeas to a smoothie may not be your first thought, they work really well! Chickpeas, aka garbanzo beans, are mild in flavor, budget-friendly, easy to keep stocked in the pantry, and nutritious.

A 1/2 cup serving of chickpeas provides 5 grams of protein, 4 grams of fiber, and other important vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin B6 and magnesium.

Kitchen Tip: Rinse canned beans before using to reduce sodium by up to 40%

I’m calling this a power smoothie because it contains about 13 grams of protein with the milk and the chickpeas. If you wanted to boost the protein content of this smoothie, you could easily swap out the cocoa powder for your favorite chocolate protein powder!
