If you, or one of your family members, are trying to manage diabetes through diet, this new cookbook from Jackie Newgent and the American Diabetes Association is a great resource and guide to have. Truly, even if you have not been diagnosed with diabetes, this cookbook is still beneficial to own because it’s full of flavorful, fuss-free recipes that can make meal planning simpler and enjoyable! I’m often sharing with people during my cooking demonstrations that we can all benefit from eating more along the lines of a diabetes-friendly eating pattern: filling half of our plate with non-starchy vegetables like leafy greens, one quarter of the plate with nutrient-rich carbohydrates like whole grains, fruits, or starchy vegetables, and the other quarter of the plate with protein foods such as lean meats, seafood, beans, or other plant-based proteins.

Building your plate using these guidelines ensures a balance of nutrient-rich foods while keeping carbohydrate intake in check. If you have a diabetes diagnosis, talk with a Registered Dietitian who can help you find the best eating pattern for you that also works with your medication treatment plan. Carbohydrate goals can vary greatly from person to person based on age, activity level, medications, and body weight. The Clean & Simple Diabetes Cookbook covers all of this and so much more, plus it simplifies the process of meal planning and preparation making it enjoyable to cook at home!

I’m excited to be giving away a copy of this new cookbook to one of my readers! At the end of this post, you’ll find details on how to enter, so let’s dive into the book!

A Look Inside The Clean & Simple Diabetes Cookbookย

Inside The Clean & Simple Diabetes Cookbook you’ll find more than 100 recipes with 45 grams of carbohydrates or less, made from natural, whole foods. Each recipe contains 7 ingredients or fewer (wow!), uses every-day common kitchen equipment, and includes a full nutrient analysis.

What I love about this cookbook is the inclusion Make-Ahead Weekly Menus that work whether you’re cooking for four people or cooking for one! I know that meal planning and preparation is usually where most people struggle when it comes to making healthier adjustments to eating, so having meal plans that fit all of the pieces together and outline when to prep certain foods is really helpful.

Sweet Cherry Milkshake

Sweet Cherry Milkshake
Sweet Cherry Milkshake from Clean & Simple Diabetes Cookbook by Jackie Newgent, RND, CDN

I’m so happy I get to share a recipe from The Clean & Simple Diabetes Cookbook with you! With only three ingredients, this Sweet Cherry Milkshake may be one of the easiest recipes in the book. When you hear the word milkshake, you may think “there’s no way that can be a diabetes-friendly recipe”, but it certainly is! This recipe uses 0% fat Greek yogurt as the base in place of ice cream, and the sweetness comes naturally from the sweet cherries.

The nutrition bonus of cherries is that they contain anthocyanins, which are polyphenols that give cherries their deep red color, These polyphenol compounds have been found to help boost insulin and lower the risk of complications for those with diabetes.
